Easing Out of Winter: Cyclical Yoga & Spring Renewal

The transition from winter to spring is one of the most powerful moments in the seasonal cycle. As the days slowly lengthen and the earth begins to stir, we find ourselves at a thresholda space between deep rest and new growth.

The Yoga Rewild approach honours the seasons in every phase of the energy cycle, through nature-based practices and embodied rituals that support grounding, replenishment, and subtle attunement. At this point in the year, rather than rushing forward, we are invited to root, nourish, and prepare for spring.

The Winter to Spring Transition: A Seasonal Threshold

Late winter can feel paradoxical. Spring is visible on the horizon, yet the body and nervous system may still be tired, inward, or depleted. In nature, very little is happening above ground — but beneath the soil, roots are strengthening and energy is gathering.

This seasonal threshold invites us to do the same.

By aligning with the winter–spring transition, we create space to listen inward, honour what has been resting, and notice what is beginning to awaken. Cyclical yoga supports this process by helping us move with nature’s rhythms rather than against them.

Celtic Folklore & the Dance of the Seasons

In Celtic folklore, this threshold between winter and spring is shaped by the relationship between two powerful feminine archetypes: the Cailleach and Brigid.

The Cailleach is the ancient hag of winter — the dark mother, guardian of the land and deep time, also known as the Bone Woman or Bird Woman. She represents endurance, protection, and the wisdom of stillness. Through winter, she holds the earth in her grasp, ensuring rest, dormancy, and preservation. Her presence reminds us of the importance of boundaries, the conservation of energy, and honouring cycles of retreat, decay, and composting.

As winter begins to loosen its hold, Brigid starts to emerge. Brigid is the goddess of spring, fertility, creativity, healing, and the sacred flame. She carries the spark of renewal — not yet a blazing fire, but a steady, warming glow. Her energy is one of gentle awakening, inspiration, and the promise of growth to come.

In some stories, the balance of the seasons depends on the Cailleach releasing her hold on the land so that Brigid may step forward. Timing is everything. This myth reflects a profound seasonal truth: emergence can only happen when rest has been sufficient.

Within us, these two energies coexist. Part of us may still need the protection and quiet of winter, while another part is beginning to stir — curious, creative, and ready for movement. Cyclical yoga invites us to honour both. Rather than rushing the transition, we learn to listen: what still needs holding, and what is ready to be gently encouraged forward?

By attuning to the wisdom of seasonal transition, we practise patience, reverence, and trust in natural timing — allowing our own spring to unfold from well-tended roots.

Why Cyclical Yoga Matters in Late Winter

Seasonal yoga recognises that our energy, emotions, and physical capacity shift throughout the year. Late winter is not a time for force or acceleration — it is a time for grounding, slower movement, and deep nourishment.

Cyclical yoga builds on this awareness by reminding us that we are also in constant flow through our inner seasons. Our energy does not move in a straight line; it ebbs and flows day to day, cycle to cycle. By practising cyclical yoga, we learn to listen more closely to these internal rhythms and respond with greater sensitivity and care.

Through cyclical yoga you may:

  • Restore depleted energy reserves by honouring rest and recovery

  • Support the nervous system through rhythm, pacing, and attuned movement

  • Strengthen boundaries and cultivate inner stability

  • Prepare the body and mind for gentle, sustainable spring growth

This approach to yoga is especially supportive if you are feeling tired, overstimulated, or disconnected from your natural rhythms and cycles.

Grounding Through the Body: Rooting, Rest & Replenishment

In nature, the first signs of spring growth begin underground. Bulbs such as snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses extend their tap roots deep into the soil, anchoring themselves before they rise.

By grounding through our yoga practice, we mirror this wisdom — rooting through the feet and legs, connecting to the earth, and drawing nourishment up into the core. This creates stability, resilience, and a sense of inner strength.

When we make space to replenish our reserves, we not only restore our own energy — that nourishment naturally ripples out into our relationships and communities.
